He sido profesor del departamento de Zoología desde enero de 1983. Desde entonces he participado en la impartición de diversas asignaturas, cursos de doctorado y másteres, tanto en la Ugr como en otras universidades. Durante el curso 1990-1991 comencé a impartir Etología, asignatura de nueva creación que impartí hasta el curso 2024-25. Desde octubre de 2006 soy Profesor Emérito. En cuanto a mi labor investigadora, ha sido subvencionada con 7 proyectos de la UE, 15 por el ministerio de ciencia de España y dos Proyectos de Excelencia de la Junta de Andalucía. He publicado 8 libros, 51 capítulos de libro y 284 artículos, 199 de ellos en revistas científicas internacionales de diferentes disciplinas. La mayoría de ellos relacionados con la Ecología del Comportamiento, mi principal línea de investigación. He sido incluido en la lista del top 2% de los investigadores más influyentes del mundo. Otras actividades: presidente del comité organizador de cuatro congresos (tres internacionales), y miembro del comité editorial de Ecology Letters y Behavioral Ecology and Sociobiology. Tareas de gestión en diversas sociedades científicas: presidente de la SEEEE (2000-2004), presidente del Comité Científico de SEOBirdlife (2001-2009), principal promotor de la creación de la SESBE (2003-2005) y su primer presidente (2005-2009).

 

I have been a professor in the Department of Zoology since January 1983. Since then, I have participated in teaching a wide range of courses, doctoral programs, and master’s degrees, both at the Ugr and at other universities. During the 1990–1991 academic year, I began teaching Ethology, a newly created course that I taught until the 2024–25 academic year. Since October 2026 I am an Emeritus Professor. My research has been funded by seven EU projects, sixteen projects from the Spanish Ministry of Science, and two Excellence Projects from the Andalusian Regional Government. I have published eight books, fifty-one book chapters, and 292 articles, 207 of which appeared in international scientific journals across various disciplines. Most of my work is related to Behavioral Ecology. I have been included in the list of the top 2% most influential researchers worldwide. Other activities: chair of the organizing committee for four conferences (three of them international), and member of the editorial boards of Ecology Letters and Behavioral Ecology and Sociobiology. I have also held management roles in several scientific societies: president of SEEEE (2000–2004), president of the Scientific Committee of SEOBirdlife (2001–2009), leading promoter of the creation of SESBE (2003–2005) and its first president (2005–2009).
