Me he dedicado principalmente al estudio de la diversidad de anfibios y reptiles de los Andes, la Amazonía y el Sahara. Los datos obtenidos me han servido para estudiar la distribución, clasificación y evolución de diversas especies, así como para delimitar y describir numerosas especies y para apoyar estrategias de conservación. Me he interesado también por la historia de la clasificación biológica y por los cambios ideológicos que influyen en como nos relacionamos con el resto de los seres vivos. Mi doctorado me llevó a Sudamérica y al Museo Nacional de Ciencias Naturales de Madrid. Tras doctorarme por la Universidad de Granada fui postdoctoral en la Universidad de Uppsala y luego en el American Museum of Natural History de Nueva York. Durante cuatro años dirigí el Departamento de Anfibios y Reptiles del Carnegie Museum of Natural History (Pittsburgh, PA). Posteriormente fui profesor en la Universidad de la Ciudad de Nueva York (CUNY) y en New York University (NYU), en impartí un curso sobre filosofía de la clasificación biológica en la escuela de graduados del American Museum of Natural History. Actualmente imparto Desarrollo Conceptual de la Biología, Zoología, y Biología Marina en la Universidad de Granada y soy investigador asociado de la División de Vertebrados del American Museum of Natural History de Nueva York.

 

Most of my research consisted of species inventories in the Andes, the Amazon and the Sahara. I used data obtained in the field to study the distribution, classification and evolution of many species, and to support conservation programs. Many new species were discovered and named along the way. I am also interested in the history of biological classification and our ideologies about nature and some of my work dwells into the philosophy of science and ethics. For my PhD I divided time between South America, the Natural History Museum in Madrid and UGR. For postdoctoral research I went first to Uppsala University and later to the American Museum of Natural History in New York. For four years I oversaw the Department of Amphibians and Reptiles at the Carnegie Museum of Natural History. Subsequently I taught biology at The City University of New York and New York University and a PhD course on the philosophy of classification at the Richard Gilder Graduate School of the American Museum. I currently teach Conceptual Development of Biology, General Zoology and Marine Biology at the University of Granada, and I’m research associate at the Division of Vertebrate Zoology of the American Museum of Natural History in New York City.
